In the modern world, new diseases are being discovered on one side; on the other, researchers and doctors are working to find their cures. Besides pharmaceutical medicines, many natural drugs are used and proven efficient in treating patients. One such drug is Cannabis, commonly known as a “Recreational Drug”.

Cannabis refers to a group of three plants, namely Cannabis sativa, Cannabis indica, and Cannabis ruderalis. After harvesting these flowers, one of the most common drugs is formed. Cannabis is mainly used due to its relaxing and calming effect. A Quick Take on Cannabis and Its Effects in recent years and profound medical research have uncovered its significant benefits that cannot be neglected. Although there is still debate about the uses and effects of Cannabis, its medicinal benefits cannot be neglected.

The two main cannabinoids are Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Cannabidiol (CBD)

CBD is a chemical in cannabis Sativa used to treat various conditions like seizures, inflammation, anxiety, nausea, migraine, depression, and chronic pain. People with epilepsy also find it helpful in dealing with seizures. It is not associated with the feeling of “high.” CBD is available in oils, supplements, extracts, etc.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

THC produces a “high” or sense of euphoria. It is helpful for insomnia, glaucoma, and low appetite. THC is available in oils, capsules, tinctures, and edibles.

Now, let’s get into cannabis and lung health!

Use of CBD

Products vary depending on how much Cannabidoil (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is present. Use of CBD, a compound found in Cannabis, is being used as an alternative remedy for many painful conditions of chronic disease to relive. CBD is available in oils, drops, capsules, candy, and even coffee. It is used to self-treat various conditions like:

Due to its potential health benefits its use is recommended by patients as they find it relieving pain. Various studies in humans and animals have shown that CBD is helpful in ease of anxiety.

Use in medicine

In the past few years, the use of Cannabis in medicine and treatment of many types of disease has gained a lot of attention. It is renowned for relieving pain in the worst sickness. Patients are reportedly using Cannabis in treating cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, managing PTSD, and chronic pain. It is linked with many desirable short-term effects like relaxation, giddiness, increased appetite, and focus. Researchers are busy looking for the long-term effects of cannabis use.

The most significant benefit of Cannabis in the medicinal industry is that it reduces nausea, vomiting, and chronic pain due to chemotherapy, spasticity, and Multiple sclerosis.” Said Bonn Miller (Director of the center on the continuum of care in Addictions)

Cannabis has a long history with humans using it for medical purposes due to its calming, relaxing, and sedative effects. Harvey Felter published a monograph in his Material Medical on “the use of cannabis in medicine” in 1922 . The monograph explained the cannabis benefits for various medical conditions. He referred to conditions like nervous depression, a brief period of sleep (insomnia), troublesome dreams, and spasmodic treatment by using cannabis. In 1988, experiments on cannabis use were done on rats, and in 1996 Canada legalized the use of

cannabis. In 2017, cannabis was found to treat many symptoms of diseases like epilepsy. In today’s world, cannabis is legalized in a few areas and is banned in some.

Cannabis and lung health

In various studies, the use of Cannabis is preferred over the use of tobacco as it does not adversely affect lung function. In a study published in 2012, The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) showed that the use of Cannabis for lung health was good. If a person smokes at a rate of one joint for a day for seven years, it does not adversely affect lung function. It was shown in the study that smoking cannabis improves lung capacity as inhaling gives the lungs and the chest a little workout.

Why Cannabis and Tobacco Affect the Lungs Differently

Cannabis and tobacco affect lung function differently because of the amount used. Cannabis is used a few times a month, whereas cigarette use is often more than once per day. According to experts, THC in Cannabis has anti-inflammatory properties to Treat Inflammatory Bowel Diseases. This can help protect the lungs and prevent irritation from developing into chronic lung diseases like Chronic Obstruction Pulmonary Disease COPD. Cigarette smoke contains nicotine which is a leading cause of pulmonary diseases. The Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study reported that Cannabis smoking does not cause respiratory risks. There are toxic gases and carcinogens present in Cannabis, but it does not lead to COPD or airway cancer. Cannabis is suggested in low doses for patients with COPD or airway cancer as it may prove protective.

“An important factor that helps explains the difference in effects from these two substances is the amount of each that is typically smoked. Tobacco users typically smoke ten to 20 cigarettes/day, and some smoke much more than that. Marijuana users, on average, smoke only two to three times a month, so the typical exposure to marijuana is much lower than for tobacco.” Pletcher said

Benefits for lungs

CBD can relieve the symptoms of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), such as losing weight, chest tightness, fatigue, and wheezing. CBD has been helpful to asthma patients by relaxing airways and improving breathing. In COPD, the lung gets highly inflamed, which results in the blockage of airways, and CBD has anti-inflammatory properties. In 2020  study, the Journal of Cannabis Research found Cannabis, which contained THC and CBD, showed anti-inflammation to the human lung cells in the laboratory.

Bronchodilation

In patients with bronchitis, CBD has been reported to widen the airways and increase the airflow in and out of the lungs. The use of CBD has been found to decrease the resistance of air and many other considerable bronchodilatory activities. For patients with COPD, using CBD helps avoid the low oxygen levels in the blood. Moreover, patients have less shortness of breath due to increased airways. This can help lower the adverse effects and delay the disease’s progress.

Anti-Inflammatory Properties

Medical experts have been experimenting to check CBD’s powerful anti-inflammatory capabilities since 2009. In a 2014 study, the use of Cannabis for lung health and decreasing inflammation was positive in animal studies. Researchers reported in a 2014 study; Cannabidiol is a “therapeutic tool” for treating inflammatory lung illness in the future.

CBD and Lung health in COVID patients

Researchers from the Dental College of Georgia and Medical College of Georgia found this summer that CBD and lung health were interlinked as the use of Cannabis for lung health improved oxygen levels and reduced inflammation and physical lung damage in a laboratory model of the severe adult respiratory distress syndrome, or ARDS. CBD can decrease the “cytokine storm” that destroys the lungs and kills many COVID-19 patients by allowing an increase in levels of apelin, which is a natural peptide known to suppress inflammation. The blood level of peptides increased 20 times with the help of CBD in patients with ARDS, and the structural damage to the lungs was repaired. Synthetic agonists increase the apelin level, but

CBD is a natural apelin agonist. So the use of Cannabis for lung health in patients with COVID was proven to be positive with the help of increasing levels of the protective peptide.

Scientific research

In the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) research, participants’ current and past smoking histories were checked. The use of Cannabis was measured as joint years. Participants were asked to inhale and exhale deeply into a device that measured the volume of air inhaled. FVC (forced vital capacity) measured the amount of air exhaled until the lungs were empty, i.e., how much lungs could hold. FEV1 (forced expiratory volume) was used to measure the amount of air exhaled during the first second, i.e., whether the bronchi are blocked by phlegm. The result for cannabis-only users showed that Cannabis improved lung capacity for both long-term and current use. FEVI was reported to decline, and FVC increased with an increased lifetime exposure at ten combined years. The deep inhalation of Cannabis was the key to expanding lung volume and strengthening the chest wall muscles.

A study on Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults included testing lung functions of more than 5,000 people aged 18-30. These included cannabis smokers, cigarette smokers, and those who used both. The results showed that people who smoked cigarettes or both had a decline in lung function over two decades. In contrast, cannabis-only smokers slightly improved lung function over time as cannabis improves lung capacity. Breathing problems were notably less in cannabis smokers. This is because people who use Cannabis are light smokers, using one joint daily, approximately 365 joints a year. Researchers concluded that besides the notable effects of cannabis on pain control, appetite, mood, anxiety, and management of other chronic pain, our finding suggested that usage of cannabis for such purposes or others does not harm pulmonary function. An accelerated decline in pulmonary function has been seen in patients who take heavy doses. There is a need for caution and consideration to gain the potential health benefits of cannabis for the lungs.

Conclusion Of Cannabis And Lung Health

In many European countries, Cannabis is decriminalized and legalized in two U.S. states. These developing rules help researchers look more deeply into the effects of Cannabis on public health. The impacts of cannabis use on mental health and health care can now be studied more openly. Sometimes the research and data calculated by experimentation in labs do not work well when given to real people. If inhaling CBD helps you feel better, you should use an edible one. The accumulated data indicates that cannabis smoking is not a significant risk factor for COPD and airway cancer. This result impacts how health professionals communicate with patients, parents interact with teenagers, and policymakers interact with their constituency. Cleaner cannabinoids should be continued, but for the time being, patients who smoke tiny amounts of Cannabis for medical or recreational purposes can breathe a little easier. So it is essential to get it from some retailer with a certificate of analysis which shows that the product is lab tested and verified for use.
